Although he did not receive formal architectural training, Japanese architect Yo Shimada has run his own office, Tato Architects, since 1997, yet he still remains a bit of an outsider. His body of work comprises a great number of residential projects, which are thoroughly explored in this instalment of the series. Characterised by openness, dynamic spatial layouts, and integrated furnishings and stairs, Shimadas designs are at once efficient and alluring, embracing the everyday in an aesthetically pleasant and refined manner. For this book he has written twenty diffuse and multifaceted texts that offer both personal reflections on completed projects and his outlook moving forward.
