In Japan, the ancient but ever young and versatile traditions of paper design and graphic art have given rise to many unique artistic forms. One of the high points of both genres is the decorative patterned paper known as chiyogami - a near relation of ukiyo-e and origami that is of high artistic quality but designed for practical use.
From Edo times on, chiyogami was made by the same sophisticated method of woodblock printing as ukiyo-e. Well-known artists created chiyogami designs, and many surviving examples are so striking that is hard to believe they were intended for ordinary consumers. In form, chiyogami resembles traditional European patterned paper, but its images and harmonies stem from the culture of early modern Japan, and its appeal is universal.
This book offers the reader a visual feast of chiyogami, together with a discussion of its history and techniques.
