Synopsis

Vienna, 1938. Imre Rochlitz, born in Budapest as a child of Jewish parents in Budapest in 1925 and raised in Vienna, has to abruptly leave his family just thirteen years old and first dives into relatives in Zagreb. In 1942, he is betrayed and deported to the Jasenovac extermination camp. Upon his escape, he manages to reach the Italian occupation territories of Yugoslavia on the Adriatic coast, where he is interned by the army of fascist Italy - paradoxically an authoritative reason for his survival. After the Italian surrender in September 1943, Rochlitz joins the partisan. He flees to southern Italy in 1945 and emigrated to the USA in 1947. In his moving account, the immediate experiences of the adolescent overlap with later memories to an extraordinary and insightful testimony of persecution, escape, and resistance. Rochlitz tells his story clearly and soberly, his language is straightforward, yet captivating. His sense of humour flashes through numerous anecdotes.
