Synopsis
"When does age begin?" - Eberhard Rathgeb throws a gentle and at the same time empathic look at getting old in "Unser Alter" and does not stop one or the other wink. Philosophically and realistically, it describes the everyday life of every man. The wide thinking horizon of the nameless man hangs over his small, tranquil life world: he lives alone, has a friend with whom he writes messages, arranges for a walk and meets for conversations; he thinks about the vitalism and the storms and urges of young animals, and becomes aware of his own fragility and finiteness. Just as it pinches and groans physically, so creaky is its kind. The mental resistance, the rebellion and adherence to life determine his way of thinking. It creates a closeness and intimacy for us readers that makes experiencing a compassion. With clarity and acumen, seriousness and humour, he looks at the past and coming. Existential but not fatalistic.
