Synopsis
Jan Zöller’s (b. Haslach, 1992; lives and works in Karlsruhe) paintings, sculptures, and installations probe the discrepancy between economic production and the spiritual and magical dimension of art. The artist’s book Ritual Believer surveys the so-called charcoal paintings series, created between 2019 and 2023. For these works, the artist paints directly in charcoal on the unprimed canvas, making it impossible to correct “blunders”. Another distinguishing feature is the virtual absence of colour; the austerity of the compositions contrasts with Zöller’s other, often intensely colourful paintings. The motifs that are the hallmark of his oeuvre - birds, running legs - are complemented by writing and text. Another aspect of this shift is that the works’ titles play a central part and almost figure as a creative element in their own right. For the text in the book, the artist sent the titles of the works shown to his brother, who wove them into a story. An appendix presents scanned archival materials. Notebooks and zines Zöller produced between 2015 and 2017 provide interesting insight into how he finds his motifs and his compositional process.

About the Author
Alexander Booth is a poet and literary translator. His translation of Lutz Seiler's collection of poems IN FIELD LATIN was published last year by Seagull Books. Gebraucht - Sehr gut Ungelesenes, vollständiges Exemplar; in sehr gutem Zustand, leichte Lagerspuren, als Mängelexemplar gekennzeichnet -In seinen Gemälden, Skulpturen und Installationen beschäftigt sich Jan Zöller (geb. 1992 in Haslach, lebt und arbeitet in Karlsruhe) mit dem Zwiespalt zwischen der wirtschaftlichen Produktion und der spirituellen, magischen Seite der Kunst. Das Künstlerbuch Ritual Believer gibt einen Überblick über die zwischen 2019 und 2023 entstandene Werkgruppe der sogenannten 'Charcoal Paintings'. Bei diesen Bildern wird mit Kohle direkt auf die ungrundierte Leinwand gemalt, was ein Ausbessern von 'Fehlern' unmöglich macht. Außerdem verzichten sie weitgehend auf Farben und sind im Vergleich zu den sonst sehr farbintensiven Gemälden von Zöller eher reduziert. Neben den für sein Werk typischen Motiven von Vögeln und laufenden Beinen ist Schrift und Text ein wichtiges Element der 'Charcoal Paintings'. Dazu gehört auch, dass die Titel der Arbeiten eine zentrale Rolle spielen und fast als eigenständiger Teil betrachtet werden können. Für den Text im Buch hat der Künstler die Titel der gezeigten Werke an seinen Bruder geschickt, der daraus eine Erzählung geschrieben hat. Im hinteren Teil befindet sich zusätzlich gescanntes Archivmaterial.
