Synopsis

Who was Wilhelm Stephan Ribel? Can files provide information about a person who lived 400 years ago? The multitude of finds allowed us to create a lifeline with amazing insights. As an Amtmann of Rhodt, Ribel steps out of the darkness of history. At his operation, a spectacular witch pursuit took place in Rhodt in 1592. Due to the good documentation, the Amtmann becomes visible as an acting person. His debt making, his self-glory, his criminal energy are also visible. Until 1606 there is evidence confirming all this. His life was mainly about money he didn't have, but apparently needed. The Speyrer Bishop Eberhard von Dienheim was one of his funders. His reputation was provided by his wife Margarete von Rechberg and their family. Since he was not noble himself, he measured himself nobility. "No happiness without strike" he wrote in a family book. Ribel has come far around for a person of his time. He left traces in Strasbourg and Stuttgart, in Bern and Lucerne. Finally, we find it in Berlin. His greatest coup was the establishment of a mint, which probably never minted coins, but brought him considerable debt and ultimately ruin. He sat in prison, escaped, was re-arrested and eventually had to swear original feud. In search of a new livelihood, he turned to Johann Georg von Brandenburg in Berlin. He dedicated two homage writings to him, which he himself wrote in rhymes. These writings form the final point of the surviving documents. However, there is an afterplay by the son of Ribels, who settled in the county to Lippe-Detmold after the Thirty Years' War. We see a surprisingly similar picture: he too became an officer, also he acted happily and was released from his office. All in all, fabric for a novel.
