Synopsis

Maria-Maria turns her back on her Romanian homeland and starts a new life in Berlin. The big city offers her the space she needs to get to terms with her past, especially with the dominant mother. When the seven-year-old comes to school, the mother burns all her daughter's dolls. The mother is a woman who makes the unwavering principles of communism her own. That's why she forbids the daughter any individual wishes. The daughter's natural need for her own growth cannot thrive here. Nevertheless, Maria-Maria dares to go her own way and disappoints not only her parents, but also all party comrades. Pushed into the corner by system constraints and collectivism, Maria-Maria strips off the shackles of her family and finds freedom in another country. But the emotional engagement with the mother lasts unabated.
