Synopsis

For left-wing movements around the world, Rojava embodies the real possibility of a better society: in July 2012, the revolution began there. In the three Kurdish-influenced cantons of Afrîn, Kobanê and Cizîrê, an autonomous self-government was established, based on the values of basic democracy, gender justice and ecology. Meanwhile, the "Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria" controls about a third of Syrian state territory. Under its roof, it combines different ethnicities, religions and languages. Since its inception, the region has had to defend itself against numerous threats. In addition to the military, diplomatic and economic conflicts with the Assad regime, it is above all the existence-threatening wars with Turkey and IS. Due to the Syrian Civil War, the region is also affected by an embargo, which greatly affects basic care. Despite all these adversities, society has evolved and built relatively stable structures. A decade after the beginning of the revolution, Christopher Wimmer examines from a critical-solidary perspective how it is about the claim and reality of the "revolutionary society". Based on over fifty interviews with people from all parts of society - from administration, educational system, military, medicine and others - he creates a multifaceted picture of everyday life, hopes and problems of the local people in a mixture of report and analysis.
