For a long time, the Germans have actually considered Angela Merkel to be alternative. But despite a phase of apparent consistency, hardly anyone can now close their eyes to reality: the Chancellor has no answers to the challenges of the present.
Merkel stands for nothing. She dodges conflict rather than taking a clear position, and has no political conviction that she would not be willing to give up again for maintaining power at any time. The result of 13 years of "driving on sight": Merkel will not leave an ordered house, but a worn party and a country that is not strengthened for the future.
Ferdinand Knauß spans an arc from Merkel's rise to power to the present and raises not only the question of what this party is that can be led by this woman for so long, but also what a society that can be ruled by her for so long.
