Synopsis

Dialects create identity and are part of regional culture. They make linguistic reality diverse and colourful. The present book is understood as a comprehensive introduction to the diverse language landscape of Rheinhessen, the area between the Rhine and Nahe, between Worms, Mainz, Bingen and Bad Kreuznach. In a total of eight chapters, delineation, age and development, vocalism and consonantism, form theory and syntax, word geography and vocabulary, and the exploration of the Rheinhessian are considered. An extensive chapter is dedicated to the Rhine-Hessian in dialect literature with their authors, as well as the dialect song from the beginnings to the present. However, the most extensive part consists of a dialect dictionary that documents the vocal forms of the words and their meanings with their respective distributions. Numerous sentence examples, sayings and proverbs convey the use of the words and offer insights into the mentality of the Rhine-Hessian dialect speaker. Especially for language-specific words, notes on etymology are provided. A total of 158 illustrations and language cards illustrate the contents and offer an interesting overview of the spatial distribution of linguistic peculiarities in the Rhine-Hessian dialect landscape. A standard work that opens up the linguistic richness and diversity of this intangible cultural heritage to both the Ur-Rheinhessen and the drawn people.
