Synopsis

The doctor Johannes Rabnow (1855 1933) was an essential protagonist of municipal health care in Schöneberg and Berlin until the first years of the Weimar Republic. Due to Rabnow's Eastern Jewish origin, his example can be used to trace the mechanisms of anti-Semitism and (forced) assimilation, which nevertheless followed a social rise with strong social medical engagement. The present study analyses the development of health and social care in the first third of the 20th century in the context of Berlin city and social history on a broad source basis and at the same time highlights a pioneer of this development from the oblivion caused by the National Socialists.
