This representation of the carnival history is not only richly illustrated with some previously unpublished picture material, but also places the development of almost night/carnival customs and forms in the generally historical context. The so-called reform carnival on the Rhine is the focus, especially the carnival in Mainz, without losing sight of the greater Cologne area. Themes such as the political-literary carnival and its emergence in the period before the revolution year 1848 and the parliament in the Frankfurt Paulskirche or even the carnival in the time of National Socialism are intensively treated. A glossary explains the basic vocabulary from the carnival cosmos in all its regional diversity.
