Synopsis

Problems require solutions. But what is described as a problem and how are answers and solutions found? Given the climate catstrophe, the unfair distribution of wealth or the demand of livable living and urban space for all, purely technical solutions are often propagated that hide political contexts and complex conditions. At the same time, there are access that only ask questions without positioning themselves with possible answers or, on the contrary, insisting on unchanging maximum solutions. Such puristic approaches as well as the technical-administratively shortened solutions leave valid power relations untouched. In contrast, we propose a radical democratically politicised approach to the problem of solution with nonsolution. The term nonsolution coined by sociologist, historian and city theorist Siegfried Kracauer opens up a field for experimental ways of thinking: not solutions are avoided, but an active non-solution is operated. The non reaffirms conflict and contrast, the rejection of holistically closed identities and the opening of building solutions to their given contexts and desirable futures. In view of residential and urban planning against capitalisation pressure and exclusion, in this book we combine planning activity with political theory to a critique of architectural doing.
