1856 in India, South Africa and America (Virginia). Harry Flashman seems advisable to leave Calcutta quickly because of one of his usual affairs, and so he embarks on a journey on which he is kidnapped in South Africa and shipped to America. There, various parties urge him to join the slave free John Brown. So he arrives in 1859 to Harpers Ferry in Virginia, where John Brown and his group of radicals plan to fire the first shot in the war against slavery. And if John Brown had listened to Flashman, he would still march instead of decaying in the grave ('John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave').
