Synopsis
AR Penck was born Ralf Winkler in 1939 in Dresden. Unlike other artists in Germany, he works with a new painting style that is figurative and politically motivated. After his expatriation from the East Germany in 1980, Penck - with his unmistakable style of stick figures and pictorial signs - created a universal vocabulary in which a revocation of prehistorical paintings is fused with current historical events and modern science to a memorable picture world. This publication shows a selection of his large-scale paintings, artist's books, sculptures and objects from 1960 to the present. It was published to accompany the exhibition at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, June - September 2007.
