9783933040602: Arman: Works on Paper

Synopsis

Inspired by the work of Kurt Schwitters, which he saw in Paris in 1954, Arman began experimenting with printmaking during the 1950s, and prints and other works on paper have been an essential part of his oeuvre since then. This is the first extensive retrospective and documentation of his works on paper, and as such, will be an essential publication on the artist's work.

Synopsis

In encountering the works of Arman, the viewer is fascinated by his unique way of handling, accumulating and de-familiarising materials. Looking at them, one realises the problematic nature of the consumer's attitude: the desire for standardisation, regulation and the availability of industrial products. Arman has studied the phenomenon of industrial mass production, de-individualisation and waste since the Fifties. He was one of the original members of the Nouveaux Realistes when the group was formed in 1960, and put the reality of everyday life and ordinary materials in new aesthetic contexts.
