Synopsis

European post-war history has always been a history of immigration, especially for the industrial centres, combined with a sustainable change in the population structure. This applies in particular to the economic wonderland of Germany. With the strangers who not only remained but also remained strangers, the question arose again: how to deal with the culturally distant, the resentment, the fear? Only since the end of the post-war period, the term has been increasingly used in the now growing Federal Republic, which - for a long time taboo - summons seemingly past and at the same time describes current information: racism. Is racism everyday? Can exclusions, discrimination and defamation of almost all kinds be described as racist? Does racism rise from the depths of dull feelings, or does it describe social conditions? Is racism just an ideological or even a practical problem? Or both? Does his supposed counterpart, anti-racism, in the end presuppose what it pretends to fight? In the old Federal Republic, but also in the former GDR, these questions have seldom or not at all been treated analytically. In the rest of (West) Europe, however, there was and is a differentiated debate under the term "racism". This anthology traces the diverse exclusions and discriminations that "the others" are currently exposed. The contributions of German, British and French authors take up the European discussion on the topic of racism and place the phenomenon into overarching contexts (multicultural society, ethnicity, ambivalence of modernity towards the foreign).
