The complexity of today's requirements for electronic devices is hardly feasible in many places with the classic concepts around microcontrollers. In many cases, networking can no longer be dispensed with. The Internet of Things would remain wishful thinking without this prerequisite. Arduino Yún now combines the classic Arduino based on an Atmel AVR microcontroller with an Atheros AR9331 System-on-a-Chip (SoC). This SOC is used in WLAN access points and router platforms and uses the Linux distribution Linino (OpenWRT) as an operating system. The Arduino Shields family has recently been expanded by the Dragino Yún Shield, which is a platform comparable to the Arduino Yún by combining with an Arduino. While an Arduino Leonardo with the Dragino Yún Shield is functionally identical to the Arduino Yún, the Dragino Yún Shield offers more flexibility through possible combinations with Arduino Uno, Duemilanove, Mega etc. In addition, the Dragino Yún Shield uses an external WiFi antenna that promises more stability and robustness of the wireless connection. The Linino operating system (OpenWRT) provides interface drivers, file system, multi-threading, and so does recurring tasks for which stable software components are available.
