Synopsis

"Text pattern on pattern texts" is the text of a lecture by Eleonore Frey and Hans-Jost Frey held in the summer semester 1988 at the University of Zurich. Two independent introductory lectures are followed by interpretations of four texts: "Enfance" by Arthur Rimbaud, "The Fly Paper" by Robert Musil, "What the Thunder Said" (from "The Waste Land") by T.S. Eliot and "Franz Goldenberg" by Konrad Bayer. As different as the texts are, so different is which observations on these texts and what considerations on them provide reason for interpretation: sometimes it is about comparison, sometimes about order and disturbance, but always the special sense of reality that literature creates. What these interpretations have in common is that they are not concerned with presenting completed interpretations, but to open the texts and their interpretation to an ambiguous conversation. So this book can also be read and understood as a conversation of two readers and authors with a very fine sense of interpreting and interpreting texts.
