Synopsis

In order to get the 2016 Olympics, the city of Rio de Janeiro had already presented a complete list of projects fixed by it in 2006, which would be implemented if its candidacy would make the race. In addition to the necessary sports facilities, the whole city should be provided with new underground and above-ground transport routes to bring together the 12 million citizens of the metropolis. The decayed port quarter should be brought to life and the port should be completely abandoned. A new cultural and business centre should be made from Rio. The city is said to shine again in the old power and beauty as it was when it was capital of Brazil until 1960. In the favelas, a large-scale pacification policy has been launched so that the common view of the divided city "Cidade Partida" can finally be wiped out. For a long time, Rio has been seen as a prime example of social injustice. Has the ambitious plan of ten years ago been transformed into reality? Will Rio stand there as a modernized and harmonised winner after the Olympics? Will the games and everything that has been done for them have a lasting impact on the city or will you just remember the games and nothing really changes? Michael von Graffenried has taken his concentrated view of the metropolis of millions and presents large-format, double-sided panoramic photographs of today's Rio in the format 24 x 59 cm in his latest book.
