Synopsis

Does a son have more insight into his father's work than outsiders? A difficult question. In any case, the book, which Christopher Rothko wrote about his father's art, combines both: inner vision and external view, personal remarks, and art science investigation. Rothko separated from life in 1970 by suicide. His son was six years old at the time. His book is therefore first the search for the lost father. But it's much more. The author draws from the rich family archive as well as from letters exchanges with friends and acquaintances. In addition, during his research, he had the extensive estate of the oeuvre around him: the important, often unknown to the public, preliminary studies on the great paintings. The result is a versatile work, declaration of love on one side, scientific exegesis on the other. Opposed, time and again, with personal memories of the disappeared who was only half there during his lifetime. Of course, Rothko's work is only revealed through concentrated, slow, long viewing, image sinking and meditation. But the wise explanation in the run-up to image viewing can help approach this century artist in a fresh way and encounter a work that magnetically captivates many but whose creator remains disturbingly enigmatic. This is the achievement of Christopher Rothkos: he opens new ways of thinking and seeing to an artist who - among others - was his father. Appears to the great Mark Rothko retrospective in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna 11 March to 30 June 2019 »Extremely sympathetic, refreshing introduction to the work of Mark Rothko!« The American School »A knowledge fundgate!« The WICHITA EAGLE »An unusually personal and insightful Memoir and art criticism. A privileged and fascinating way of view." Kirkus Review
