Synopsis

The poems of Konstantin Biebl take you to foreign worlds: to the island of Java, to Prague, but also to the First World War. The selection volume "Pineapple" contains Biebl's most beautiful poems, volumetric dreams about exotic lands and mythical landscapes. Also included is his long poem "The New Ikaros", which is a particularly typical "zone poem" ("Pásmo"). The genre of zone poem developed in the Czech poem of the 1920s and is inspired by the poem "Zone" Guillaume Apollinaires. Biebl's contemporary Vítězslav Nezval has written the particularly touching zone poem "Edison". (Apollinaire's "Zone" and Nezval's "Edison" are included in translation by Ondřej Cikán in Vítězslav Nezval: "A poet at night".) Cikán writes his own zone poems in German (in whose volumes "Mein Liebling ist Gewölk" and "Blooming Demons"). Passages from Biebl's "The New Ikaros", which are about the First World War, remind of Paul Celan's "Death Fugue".
