Synopsis

The present volume 38 of the series "Wanderungen in die Erdgeschichte" would like to invite you to discover significant earth-historical sites along the Rhine and point you the way to these interesting geotourist destinations.
With the presentation of selected geoscientific features on the right of the Rhine from Basel to Mannheim, this book offers the interested public the opportunity to deepen the vividly prepared geoknowledge with practical experience. This knowledge and recognition of how valuable a geological outcrop or geotope landscape is is also intended to help preserve such a document of Earth's history, and thus preserve an intact environment. Geotope protection is the abiotic part of nature conservation and thus the monument protection of planet earth. The aim of the book is also to stimulate a special tourism, geotourism, with this conveying geoscientific topics and thus promote sustainable economic development of the Upper Rhine region.
These three goals, namely the preservation of an intact environment through increasing geotope protection, secondly, sustainable economic development of the region by means of geotourism and thirdly, the teaching of geoscientific topics for an improvement of the general geoscientific knowledge in the population can be summarized in »Protect and benefit through knowledge!«
In this volume, for time and resource reasons, the selection had to be limited to right-wing Rhine geopunces. Of course, this was also done in the hope that this right-wing Rhine line of view will also be supplemented in a comparable follow-up volume in the future with left-wing Rhine geopolinates in Alsace and in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The present volume is introduced by two longer review contributions. The first summarizes the geological framework under the title »From high mountains to depth structure – the Upper Rhine graben between Basel and Mannheim«. The second focuses on the cultural history of the current under the title "The Upper Rhine – Life and Traffic Artery in the course of times".
The main part of the book are the portraits of a total of 50 places worth seeing and interesting geological history. When selecting and compiling the 50 geopots, attention was paid to an even distribution along the "Basel-Mannheim" viewing line as well as a varied mix of themes with visiting options for all weather conditions.
We wish you a lot of joy and insights on your hikes and discoveries into the earth history along the Rhine.
Finally, all participants and supporters, especially the authors, but also the image authors and graphic designers are very grateful. Without the intensive cooperation of the State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining Baden-Württemberg in the Freiburg Regional Council with the preparation and provision of its geodata inventory, it would not have been possible to prepare this project begun in October 2018 for printing in a short time.
We also thank the Pfeil-Verlag, namely Dr. Hubert Hilpert and Dr. Friedrich PFEIL, who enabled the skilful and appealing implementation of our book idea in an extremely renowned series.
