Synopsis

Proverbs play an eminently important role in the collective consciousness of the Portuguese. It is the sabedoria do povo, the "wisdom of the people". Peter Koj has gathered 600 of the most famous Portuguese proverbs and presents them in 60 episodes. He proceeds with the peculiarity often observed in Portugal of quoting only the first half of a saying in a conversation situation (because everyone knows the second). In his book, Peter Koj also delivers the second half of the respective proverbs, but not in the same order as that of the first half. The fun now consists in the correct assembly of the two halves. For that of the Portuguese unknown, there is an interlinear translation into German and, of course, a solution key. In addition, the Hamburg book illustrator Marlies Schaper has put a number of the proverbs in the picture. To this main part there are various excourses on topics such as the "wisdom" of the proverbs or to the popular verballhorn of proverbs in Portugal, plus a lesson for advanced students (high school high school, university, VHS). An alphabetical directory of the proverbs gathered in this book as well as a topic index round out the book and make it a useful reference book. The author closes a painfully perceived gap with his book. The proverb treated so far stepmotherly in Portuguese textbooks is not only a didactically excellent means of acquiring difficult linguistic phenomena, it also provides access to the areas of conversational culture, advertising and even literature, but it serves as a stylistic means for a number of well-known authors (José Saramago, José Cardo. so Pires, los de Oliveira u. a. ).
