This book seeks to indicate a political context for the interpretation of artistic activities at the close of the twentieth century, through a montage of images and documents from the immediate post-war period to the present. The range of material treated here is not encyclopedic; it represents a polemical attempt to isolate specific strands of artistic production and political endeavor which can be taken as references in the contemporary debate over the evolution of our societies. Drawing from distinct yet interrelated territorial and linguistic domains, the book singles out complex cultural responses to the unifying processes of global modernity.

This work presents the key visual and textual documents on postwar avant garde art and theory. It brings together the work of more than 100 of the world's foremost thinkers, writers and artists in an anthology of texts and images of the development of Western culture and critical theory since 1945. A montage of visual documents recounts the postwar history of the avant garde in all areas of artistic creation: architecture, film, photography, painting, sculpture, installation, performance and more. A parallel sequence of texts ranges from key source material of the last 50 years to contemporary contributions examining the turning points of culture since the war. In addition to analyzing the history of the avant garde, the contemporary essayists - among them Etienne Balibar, Benjamin Buchloh, Andrea Branzi and Masao Miyoshi - explore the critical potential of artistic activity in the contemporary context of globalization, where the promises of new forms meet the realities of economic inequality, ecological crisis, and rising social conflict.
Edited by the curator of the 1997 exhibition, the book is an integral part of "documenta X" rather tha a catalogue of the exhibition, and, as such, stands alone. It is should be valuable for working writers, theorists, curators and artists as well as providing students with a reference source."About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.
