Synopsis

The novel "Killing Time in a Warm Place" tells of a childhood and youth in the Marcos period, of people and families living in the countryside or in cities, always on the go for a better work, a better life for themselves and their children. Most arrange themselves with dictatorship, with the ubiquitous police violence and corruption; they follow the Marcos regime even when martial law is proclaimed. But there is also political resistance, starting from students who join the Maoist movement, partly go their own risky ways to combat the dictatorship. Dalisay describes this situation from the eyes of young people who are in search of ideals, sacrifice their careers, are observed, arrested and also tortured, then have to spend long years in camps until the regime finally collapses under mass protests. The novel unfolds a vast and colourful panorama about life in the Philippines, about dulling in a dictatorship, about political awakening and also about errors and turmoil of student resistance. And all in a vibrant, multifaceted language, seasoned with a lot of irony and wit.
