Synopsis

Born from Bohemia and raised in Central Hesse, the writer Peter Kurzeck (1943-2013) has spent the last 20 years of his life in the small southern French town of Uzès. Several of his novels, including the opulent eve, have emerged there, although France does not play the main role in its idiosyncratic prose dedicated to the memory of the last century. Located between Avignon and Nîmes, Uzès has a medieval and Renaissance cityscape unusual for France's south, was bishop's seat, and the huge castle of the Dukes of Uzès even had its own residential tower for the French king. Uzès is also a lively, urban city whose numerous cafes, restaurants and the now famous market Peter Kurzeck was as familiar as with the partially wild hilly landscape all around. The publisher and author couple Günter Kämpf and Vilma Link-Kampf (†2022) have lived and worked close to Uzès in a former farm for two decades and maintained a friendly contact with Peter Kurzeck. It describes the city and its special history from as intimate experience as the author Kurzeck in this southern setting. The description of joint excursions, e.g. to the Camargue and the sea, to the nearby Pont du Gard and information about the unique garrigue landscape of the region, complement the text. In between, Peter Kurzeck himself always comes to word. Thus, together with the numerous photos, a portrait of the author and friend P.K. and at the same time an individual small travel guide for Uzès and the surrounding landscape, in which in addition to the important historical traces, wine, olives, truffles as well as cherries and apricots play a major role.
