The architect Rudolf Hamburger (1903-1980), a student of Hans Poelzigs, brought the ideas of new building from Berlin to Shanghai in the thirties, where he realized remarkable buildings. In 1955 he was allowed to return from the Gulag to the GDR, where he could work as an architect in Dresden and in Hoyerswerda for a few years and the Stasi became aware of him. His friendships with Richard Paulick, Martha Dodd, Brigitte Reimann left traces that illuminate important aspects of the political and cultural developments of the 20th century.
