Synopsis

Finnish artist Jaako Heikkila has long been interested in various small and minority communities around the world. Here he meets people on the shores of the White Sea in Russia, in New York's Harlem and on the Brazilian island of Itaparica. He follows Armenians from their homeland to Los Angeles and Venice, listening to the history of their family three generations after the genocide of 1915. His empathy for his many subjects appears in the intimate and poetic portraits he creates with a panoramic camera. They are an expression of peoples' rights and freedom.

Since 1989 independent artist
Lives and works in Kukkola, in the Torne River valley, which forms the boundary between Sweden and Finland.
His work is in many international collections, e.g. The Deutsche Börse Collection and he has selfpublished several books. Silent Talks is his fifth monography.
He has represented Finland at the Venice Biennial 2005.
2010 he was included in the Forest Birch Project, White Box, New York, USA.

Ritva Röminger-Czako, born in Helsinki, Finland, is a curator at the Kunstmuseums Bonn, Germany and also a freelance curator for Scandinavian art.
