Hardback. Condition: Very good. First Edition. 25 x 28cm 376pp very good hardback. The Havana-based duo of Marco Antonio Castillo ValdÈs and Dagoberto RodrÌguez S nchez are two of the most exciting artists in Cuba today. Formed in 1991, and working since 1994 under the name Los Carpinteros, which they adopted as a nod to traditional craftsmen's guilds, the team renounces individual authorship to sabotage the disciplines of design and architecture from within. Their elegant and mordantly humorous sculptures, which attain high standards of craftsmanship assert a deadpan non-functionality: a crazily undulating wooden bookshelf, a filing cabinet with an impossibly deep drawer, or stereo speaker cones transformed into billboard hoardings. By putting functional and serious disciplines to nonfunctional and humorous ends, Los Carpinteros offer a crazy world in which objects seem to have swapped bodies with other objects. Has English text with colour reproductions. A very heavy book, may need extra postage. Seller Inventory # 29667

(see image) / Los Carpinteros is a Cuban artist collective founded in Havana in 1992 by Marco Antonio Castillo Valdes, Dagoberto Rodriguez Sanchez, and Alexandre Arrechea (who left the group in 2003). In 1994 they decided "to renounce the notion of individual authorship and refer back to an older guild tradition of artisans and skilled laborers" in an attempt to emphasize their belief that art always, to some extent, involves collaboration. Both Valdes and Sanchez were born in Cuba and live and work between Havana and Madrid. They have exhibited in Cuba, Europe and North America, and have received a number of awards.
