Synopsis

1978/79: After his training as a roofer, Gabriel escapes the violent narrowness of his Rhenish parents' home by going on a hike, according to old craftsman tradition. Fortified with Stenz and Charlie, he discovers the land of his origin in all its beauty and torn. His faithful companion: a hiking book to which he entrusts not only his stations and acquaintances, but also his deepest thoughts. They revolve around freedom, sexuality, society, family, and the power of words. When Gabriel beaches in West Berlin and gets to know the punk pill in a Kreuzberg squatter-share, he experiences the feeling of intimate friendship for the first time in his life. Or is it love? For a few weeks, it seems like he's arrived. But the rolling is not over yet - and the search for a language of their own just at the beginning... Only a few writers manage to measure eras, places and cultures with the means of language as Michael Roes. His new book, which he ironically refers to as "home novel", is a literary roll from value breakdown in NRW to Taizé in France. With every kilometer the first-person narrator moves further away from "vaddern" and "muddern," his thoughts become more playful and his desire to push the boundaries of his own origins greater. Thus, the text sketches not only a geographical journey, but also an escape from the dreary silence of the West German Vorwende province into the solved rhetoric of a free spirit. On the roadside: the Alps, the sea and just those life-changing detour into the past parallel world of the exit island West Berlin, whose anarchist spirit "Spunk" sets a monument.
