In 1936, thousands of anti-fascist volunteers, including some 800 Swiss, supported the Spanish Republic in the defensive fight against coup generals. At the same time, official Switzerland sought the approach to General Franco early and closed its eyes to the mass murder he committed on its own population. Franco's victims included Swiss brigadists, but also civilians who had lived in Spain for many years. After the victory of the "nationals", they got into the repression machinery of the new rulers. Using detailed case studies, Ralph Hug describes these unknown destinies. They illuminate the moral failure of Helvetic diplomacy, which sympathized with the new fascist order and placed good relations with the Franco regime above the consistent protection of human rights. The book brings light to an inglorious chapter of Swiss contemporary history in the 20th century.
