Synopsis

In the second half of the 20th century, a radical left of astonishing strength and diversity existed in Italy. Perhaps the most important current was that of operaism. Starting from dissident activists and theorists of the workers' movement, this direction developed from the late 1950s, to which important representatives of left theory formation refer to today - such as Antonio Negri, Paulo Virno, Mariarosa Dalla Costa, Silvia Federici, Mario Tronti, Harry Clea.. or John Holloway. Dominik Götz reconstructs the red thread of operaist theory formation as well as points of connection and break lines with the Marxist mainstream. Subsequently, he traces the developments, divisions and differentiations of autonomous Marxism in the "hot" 1960s and 1970s. It opens up numerous Italian original texts for the first time of the German-speaking readers. The analysis ends with the attempt of an answer to the question of whether operaism actually remains limited to a very narrow period of time, as Mario Tronti thinks, or whether the theory corpus has still retained relevance to this day.
