Synopsis

The French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon I. Bonaparte (1769-1821) destabilized European power relations. As a result, there were warlike clashes between France and changing European alliances from 1792. On May 9, 1809, Austria again challenged Napoleon to battle, the 5th Coalition war had begun. Two of the most significant battles of this war took place in the immediate vicinity of Vienna. The choice of the marching area fell on the March field in the area of the two villages Aspern and Essling. The fighting began on May 21, 1809, reaching their peak on May 22, and ended with Napoleon's retreat to the island of Lobau. This was subsequently expanded by the French to a fortified weapon place, which served them as a starting point for the battle of Deutsch-Wagram, in which the Austrians were devastatingly beaten. In the years 2008 to 2016, the city archaeology of Vienna was accompanied by the emergence of the seaside city Aspern archaeologically. In the course of eight excavation campaigns, burials related to the Battle of Aspern and Essling were uncovered. They are presented in this book for the first time in summary with an analysis of the recovered uniform remnants and anthropological evaluation in the context of contemporary events and armies.
