Synopsis
Pain, although a historical constant, is culturally and temporally specific. Cultural gender orders influence what is perceived as painful and how pain is expressed, communicated and interpreted. The articles collected in this special issue illustrate the interlinkage of gender and pain. The case studies address a number of topics, from deliberately self-inflicted pain in psychiatric contexts and as queer-feminist art practice to interpretations of birth pain by male physicians to female Greek mourning rituals and a Jewish photographer's attempt to deal artistically with the trauma of the Holocaust. The focus is on Europe in the 19th and 20th century.

About the Authors
Bożena Chołuj ist Literaturwissenschaftlerin und Professorin für Deutsch-Polnische Literaturbeziehungen und Gender Studies an der Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder). Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich Stereotypenforschung, interkulturelle Kommunikation, nationale Identitäten, Alltag, Lebenswelt, Subversivität in Literatur/Literaturwissenschaften.
Maria Fritsche ist Professorin für moderne internationale Geschichte an der Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norwegen. Sie forscht und publiziert seit vielen Jahren zum Themenkomplex Wehrmachtjustiz und Nationalsozialismus. Weitere Forschungsschwerpunkte: Alltag unter deutscher Besatzung, Film- und Kinogeschichte, Männlichkeit und Militär, Wiederaufbau Europas.
Elisa Heinrich ist Uni:Docs-Stipendiatin am Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien. Sie forscht zu Diskursivierungen weiblicher Homosexualität um 1900.
Isabella Löhr ist Professorin für internationale Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts an der FU Berlin. Zugleich leitet sie am Leibniz-Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung Potsdam die Abteilung "Globalisierungen in einer geteilten Welt".
Heidrun Zettelbauer ist Historikerin und Professorin für Neuere/Neueste Geschichte an der Universität Graz. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich geschlechtersensible Nationalismusforschung, Körpergeschichte, Auto/Biographieforschung und Geschlechtergeschichte des Ersten Weltkriegs.
