Synopsis
The contributions of the issue examine the interplay between gender and emotion and trace the dynamics of rigidity, instability and fluidity within it. Fluidity, in these essays comes in several forms and registers: as ambivalence, circulation and divergence. Our essays explore the interface between the social and the individual as well as the points of tension or cohesion that appear in ways of feeling (out of) gender. In bringing fluidity to the centre of our analysis, this special issue advances an understanding of gender, emotions and their interactions as phenomena in motion and in the process of becoming, rather than fixed. With a geographical scope encompassing Zambia, Turkey, Soviet Russia and India, and drawing on archival histories, individual biographies, ethnographies and explorations of popular culture, we elaborate how gender categories are strengthened, disturbed or made ambivalent by emotions.

About the Authors
Rukmini Barua verteidigte ihre Dissertation an der Universität Göttingen. Ihre Forschungsinteressen liegen in der Geschichte und Sozialanthropologie Südasiens mit Schwerpunkt Geschichte der Emotionen, Arbeit und städtischer Raum.
Dr. Christa Hämmerle ist ao. Professorin für Neuere Geschichte und Frauen- und Geschlechtergeschichte an der Universität Wien und Leiterin der Sammlung Frauennachlässe.
Dr. Claudia Kraft ist seit 2018 Professorin für Kultur-, Wissens- und Geschlechtergeschichte am Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien mit Schwerpunkten u.a. auf der Geschichte des Staatssozialismus in Mittel- und Osteuropa, Rechtsgeschichte und Zwangsmigration.
Dr. phil. Francisca Loetz, D.E.A., ist ausserordentliche Professorin für Allgemeine Geschichte der Neuzeit an der Universität Zürich.
Dr. Alexandra Oberländer ist Russlandhistorikerin mit Schwerpunkt 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. In ihren Forschungen beschäftigt sie sich u.a. mit Wahrnehmungen sexueller Gewalt im ausgehenden Zarenreich sowie mit der Kultur- und Emotionsgeschichte der Arbeit in der späten Sowjetunion.
