Synopsis

In this collection of essays, Johann Georg Hamann's basic thesis of "God as a writer" is interpreted and placed in far-reaching literary contexts. The relationship between speaking, hearing and seeing is examined theologically and eschatologically. Hamann's thoughts on the Lord's Supper and the "Sacrament of Language" are related to the role of eating and drinking. Hamann interpreted the Narcissus episode of Ovid's "Metamorphoses" in a christological way and, as a connoisseur of the Epistle to the Hebrews, wrote a critical review of the commentary by J. D.
