Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Camille Corot, Leotine und die Turteltaube, 1872. Gesetzt aus Minion Pro, 11 pt. Uber den Autor: 1776 in Konigsberg auf die Vornamen Ernst Theodor Wilhelm getauft, nennt er sich spater aus Verehrung fur Mozart Ernst Theodor Amadeus oder kurz E.T.A. Hoffmann. Er studiert Jura in Konigsberg, wird Referendar am Berliner Kammergericht, wegen Karikaturen auf preussische Offiziere strafversetzt nach Polen und schliesslich Kapellmeister in Bamberg. Bis er 1814 nach Berlin zuruckkehrt widmet er sein kunstlerisches Schaffen vornehmlich der Musik. Er wird zum Kammergerichtsrat berufen, grundet den Serapinenorden und schreibt seine grossen Romane, Die Elixiere des Teufels und die Lebensansichten des Katers Murr, sowie zahlreiche Erzahlungen, deren vorletzte, der Meister Floh, beschlagnahmt wird, weil der preussische Polizeidirektor in der Figur des Knarrpanti eine Satire auf seine Person sieht. 1822 erkrankt E.T.A. Hoffmann schwer und diktiert - vollig gelahmt - vom Sterbebett aus die Erzahlung Des Vetters Eckfenster, in der der grosse Romantiker sich dem kritischen Realismus annahert bevor er am 25. Juni in Berlin stirbt."
