Synopsis

Rural economy is highly dominating the national economy of Bangladesh. However, the traditional transportation systems of goods and services are still hindering the smooth development of rural areas. Indigenous technologies have come forward to meet the need of growing demand of rural transports. The traditional animal driven transports are now converted in to mechanical one with the help of machines. These newly developed transport modes are playing very important role to carry goods and services in the rural areas of Bangladesh as a dominant mode in south western part of the country. This book consists the problems, prospects and the role of such indigenous vehicles in rural economy in terms of positive and negative issues. At the end, some recommendations have been given so that these informal but very efficient transport modes can be brought under some enforcement to maintain the road safety in rural areas of Bangladesh.

Dr. Khan Rubayet Rahaman is now doing research with the issues of sustainable mobilities and urban rural linkages in developingcountries in Khulna University, Bangladesh.Md.Arifur Rahaman is a planner and working in the nationallevel urban development projects in Bangladesh.
