Synopsis

An impressive testimony to the irritating at the same time of proximity and distance that shaped the German-Jewish discourse at the beginning of the 20th century. Rainer Maria Rilke has been interested in Judaism throughout his life, but hardly expressed himself - an exception is his letters addressed to Ilse Blumenthal-Weiss in 1921/22. were only published in parts and are now published for the first time in the form of a dialogical exchange of letters. The exchange of letters is supplemented by Rilke's contribution to the 1906 round question »To solve the Jewish question« as well as texts by Blumenthal-Weiss, who emigrated to the USA as a Shoah survivor in 1947. Long before Rilke philology, she dealt with Rilke's relationship to Judaism (as well as other aspects of his life and work) in lectures and articles and remained a critical observer of the German-Jewish discourse of the postwar period.
