July 17, 1958 marks the entry of German research into elementary particle physics. On this day, the 500 MeV electron synchrotron of the University of Bonn completed a full acceleration cycle for the first time.
From 1952 to commissioning, the Synchrotron itself was an experiment. Without relevant experience and only with a few employees, the then Bonn Institute Director and later Nobel Prize winner Wolfgang Paul had taken the dare to build a particle accelerator according to an untested design principle.
In its second phase, the Synchrotron became an instrument of national cutting-edge research. After that, it served primarily as a training machine, since 1995 it has been presented as an exhibit in the Bonn branch of the German Museum.
Ralph Burmester traces the unusual life path of this machine in the context of national efforts to civilian use of nuclear energy and the dynamic development of elementary particle physics in the 1950s and 1960s. In addition to the reconstruction of the history of creation and impact, the focus is on the question of the specific success factors of the project.
