Synopsis

An everyday and mentality historically revealing document about war and captivity. On January 14, 1943, the doctor Dr. Horst Rocholl (1908-2003) wrote to his wife: "The soldier in the trench can come home wounded, badly wounded or sick. I was not allowed to move forward because I am a doctor and must make our soldiers fight again. So I wait for the day before which I grey, not because of probable death, no, because of what I have to see and feel in the process." The battle for Stalingrad was the central event in Horst Rocholl's life that determined his further worldview. In the prisoner of war, the NSDAP member opened up to new ideas, shaped by the insight into German guilt. Despite collaboration in the National Committee of Free Germany (NKFD), he was sentenced to 25 years in camp in 1948, which he served in Vorkuta and as a doctor in a Stalingrad camp. Here he got to know Ottmar Kohler, the model for Konsalik's novel "The Doctor of Stalingrad", a novel with which Rocholl will later deal extremely critically. In 1953 he was released prematurely and went to the GDR, where he practiced as a doctor and was a founding member of the "Working Group of Former Officers". In his numerous letters to the family, which are first published here, the development of Rocholl from the regime-loyal officer under Hitler to a critical anti-fascist is traceable.
