By analyzing the discourses on sustainable development in different European countries, this book pursues the question of whether or not there is a common understanding of sustainable development in Europe and if sustainable development could become one, if not the, integrating policy project for the upcoming years. The term 'sustainable development' is used for diverse phenomena and has multiple meanings. Here, the case studies are based on an integrative approach - intergenerational, interterritorial, and intersectoral - to analyze governance structures and sustainable development players in Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Norway, and Sweden, as well as in the EU.
