Synopsis

Digitizing photography and film in the 1990s was a paradigm shift in function, production, and camera practice. Chemical development labs had become obsolete, the wait had come to an end - the visual products were available immediately. And yet – taking photos with a specially necessary apparatus was reserved for special occasions or at least was occasion-related. But then came the smartphone. Its popularization means a massive upheaval for the world of images - a revolution that has elementarily changed everyday life and leisure, our visual practices, but also many professional fields and will still change. No longer only the photography itself, but rather the sharing and communication through photographs on social networks has determined the life world of many people. The Photography Commission of the German Society for Folklore dedicated itself with its cooperation partner, the State Museums in Berlin, as part of the conference "SnAppShots. Smartphones as a camera" in October 2020 this paradigm shift. The conference volume combines contributions from scientists from the departments of history, art history, ethnology, empirical cultural studies, European ethnology, educational science, pedagogy and media studies - a kaleidoscope to the visual world of the smartphone.
