From the Back Cover

The Nematomorpha are long and thin worms. They are free-living as adults and parasitic as larvae. The name of the nematomorph species Gordius was derived from the copulatory tangles they form at mating time, which resemble the well-known gordian knot from greek mythology. With four marine and about 300 freshwater species, the Nematomorpha are a small taxon within the Nemathelminthes. The Gordiida comprise the freshwater spedes and are divided in 20 genera, 12 of which occur in Europe. All Gordiida are parasites in arthropods such as beetles or grasshoppers and can be found free-living in late summer in various freshwater habitats (lakes and ponds, rivers, ditches and temporary puddles). The main intention of this volume is to give an up-to-date account of the biology and taxonomy ofthe Gordiida; the morphology is presented äs an overview using histological and electron microscopy techniques.
