Synopsis

A paradigm of modern interaction in science and culture

"What is not unspeakable has no weight at all" (Paul Valéry): This also applies to scientific theories, they unfold their effect by the fact that only through their work on and with terms a previously unconceived thing can come to mind. Hans Blumenberg's paradoxical concept formation of "inconceptability" does not only aim at such interaction processes in the sciences, but also tries to reconstruct the metaphorological foundations of modernity, especially in its life-world anchorage. This volume introduces this theory-historical project by discussing models of inconceptability (including Schleiermacher, Simmel, Benjamin, Kracauer, de Man, Luhmann, Marin) and at the same time opening possibilities to current literary theoretical, cultural studies, media semiotic and anthropological concepts.
