The use of short waves in the 1.5 to 30 MHz frequency range is still of great significance following the introduction of the transmission of all kinds of information by means of stationary satellites and broadband or multiplex cables. This applies especially to aeronautical and maritime radio services, mobile and stationary services of all kinds and world-wide transmission of broadcast programmes. In contrast to the first edition of this book, the second edition incorporates the new frequency allocation plan published by the UIT in Geneva in 1982 and the new designations for classes of emission. In the interests of clarity, a table showing the comparison of the former designations with those in force today is included in an appendix.
