Synopsis

A book that takes us readers back to childhood and lets us feel how big and infinitely important everything was. Because Matara is a state - born from childlike imagination. It is the story of boys who rise a state with borders, laws and an army in the Finnish forest. They patrol, carry swords, wage war, and have laws. The most important thing is that it is forbidden to speak of what is happening outside Matara. Matias Riikonen takes the childlike game seriously, describes it completely credible in its details and never makes it appear childish. So he leads us readers back to our childhood and lets us feel how big and infinitely important everything was. Because even adults should remember that every knight's castle was impregnable. Matara appeared in Finland in 2021 and was one of the most talked about books of the year. It has been nominated for the Finlandia Prize among other things - the most important literary prize in the country.
