Synopsis
Three centuries of reverse painting on glass are shown and discussed in the richly-illustrated volume of more than 100 previously unpublished reverseglass pictures. A unique feature of the book is that, for each reverse painting, the print on which it was based has been identified and is fully illustrated. The close link between reverse glass paintings and prints has long been noted in the literature, though Reverse Paintings on Glass is the first book to take this interesting subject as its central focus. A well-founded discussion on this self-contained and not easy to classify art form precedes the illustrations, which are complemented not only by details of the most important technical characteristics but also by informative commentaries on the artists and the content of the pictures. The result of the extensive research put into the investigation results in a stimulating and enlightening publication. The book comprises a wealth of images and essays, a bibliography, an index, and is fully bilingual in English and German.
