Synopsis
A new group of works has been emerging in the intense oeuvre of paintings by the great actor Armin Mueller-Stahl for around five years. In this series of works on paper and canvas, the highly talented artist explores the roles and characters of his career as an actor on stage and in front of the camera. Selbst in ... opens a new chapter in his artistic production and at the same time invites the viewer to explore a series of diverse references to his acting career. As one of the most popular actors in the GDR, he left the country in 1980, filmed in West Germany with Rainer Werner Fassbinder (Lola) and also enjoyed great success in Hollywood from 1989 onwards, working with Barry Levinson (Avalon), Jim Jarmusch (Night on Earth), Steven Soderbergh (Kafka) and Volker Schlöndorff (Der Unhold).

Nach einer Ausbildung zum Musiker (Geige) begann er seine Schauspielkarriere in Ostberlin. Mit zahlreichen Theater- und Filmrollen (unter anderem in Königskinder, Nackt unter Wölfen und Jakob der Lügner) gehörte er zu den beliebtesten Schauspielern der DDR. Als Mitunterzeichner der Petition gegen die Ausbürgerung Wolf Biermanns erhielt er ab 1976 keine Engagements mehr, verließ 1980 die DDR und setzte seine Karriere nicht nur in Westdeutschland, sondern auch international erfolgreich fort.
